We write to taste life twice, in the moment and in retrospection
~ Anaïs Nin
Hello and welcome!
I’m Colleen Reagon, writer.
I’m a seeker of truth, beauty and simplicity. Student of life and the Italian language. I’m also a traveller, amateur photographer, enthusiastic gardener and aspiring cook. And Italy and all things Italian have a huge part of my heart.
This story and website began with a desire to live in a wholehearted way — its genesis was a blog called A passionate life. But my story is evolving. . .
For the past ten years my life played out in three different spheres — communication professional, blog writer (three different blogs) and traveller. To me they were unconnected, each with its own story. However, it became clear that to live wholeheartedly, I had to find common threads in these areas and weave them into one narrative. Although I didn’t recognise it before, I now understand that writing is the golden thread that connects all the spheres of my life. And building a life around working with words in ways that matter to me is part of my vision for building a wholehearted life.
It’s time to have the courage to show my authentic self —wearing all my hats—as I move into this new chapter of my story.
This new chapter involves huge changes — a different way of life. It’s selling our business and our home and moving with my husband and our princess dog, Lily, from suburban Adelaide Australia to the south coast of New South Wales. Clearing out, closing down and packing up a life occupied us for twelve months. But we’ve arrived, ready to weave the threads to create a new tapestry.
After many years of writing and editing in the corporate world, I worked with my husband in our small business and came to appreciate the writing needs and challenges of those of you who follow your passions and pour your hearts and souls into your business. My words work in many ways — in brochures and magazines, on websites and social media. I can help you connect and engage with your clients through your communication.
For me, travel is a big part of living a passionate life. I’ll share stories about exploring this stretch of Australian coastline that is my new home. People, places, food and culture are what engages me. My Italian journeys have a place here too. I’ve been travelling to Italy regularly for the past ten years. I speak the language well enough to engage in conversation, and well, I’m in love with the people, the beauty, the traditions and the history of this ancient culture.
My passionate life
In my journal you’ll read about my odyssey to live a passionate life — inch by inch. It’s also the place where I record the joy in my everyday, it’s a reminder to be grateful, and to keep me on the straight and narrow for living an authentic, purposeful life. You won’t find advice here, I don’t have the secret to living a passionate life. For each of us, living a passionate life is a personal journey and to find joy, all of us walk a different path. These pages are my story but I’d love to hear yours too, so drop me a line!
I believe in:
● effective communication — being aware of the messages we send and receive and how they are received and understood by others
● sincerity — heartfelt words always win over saying what you think others want to hear
● integrity — honesty and fairness are my friends
● good relationships — those built on a foundation of good communication
● having the courage of your convictions — being willing to stand up for what you believe
● appreciation — being grateful very day
● beauty — it’s all around us
● words — they are my world
● learning — I’m a lifelong student
● Italy — the place of my heart
● chocolate and Italian gelato
A few other things about me:
I’m an Aquarian, mother, wife, and dog lover. I practice yoga and pilates, and eat healthily most of the time. I’m an avid reader — I’m often reading a few at the same time, including an Italian language novel as well as non-fiction.
What brings me here:
My life evolved to no great plan. I was born in South Africa and emigrated to Australia with my family when I was seventeen. I found a job, found the love of my life and by 25, was a mother of two.
I graduated with a communications degree, worked as a writer and editor in the corporate world and continued my studies in business, PR, visual communication and Italian language.
Life threw its punches and after some scary health issues, amore and I travelled to Italy. What an eye-opening, life-changing trip it was! After living for years in a sort of limbo, my quiescent heart was aflame with awe and gratitude. I found a place where I felt a sense of belonging, an affinity with the people, an appreciation of the beauty of this ancient land, and the musicality of the spoken word.
In short, I fell in love with Italy and all things Italian. I travelled there every year, sometimes solo, studied my Italian and the rest of the time, I worked in our business.
But my life was still blowing in the wind.
. . .until our life-changing decision to transition from the suburbs to a place near the sea.
My aim is to live a meaningful life, not just skim the surface of experiences. I want to live in the present, to find joy in the everyday, and to discover the extraordinary in the ordinary.
I’m really happy you’re here and I hope you’ll find something on these pages that resonates with you. So, stay a while and if you’d like to engage and share your own stories, I’d really love it!
